Working Principle

How It Works

Emergency luminaires contain a continuously trickle-charging battery (SLA or NiMH) and an LED module. On mains power failure, automatic switching circuitry transfers the light to battery power within 0.5 seconds — imperceptibly fast to occupants. The LED illuminates exit signs, escape route directions, and stairwell pathways for a minimum of 3 hours. Non-maintained units are off during normal use; maintained units serve as regular lighting and emergency backup simultaneously.

Monthly: test auto-switching by simulating mains failure for 30 seconds

6-Monthly: full rated duration discharge test (3-hour drain test)

Annual: inspect battery condition, LED output, and mounting security

Replace batteries every 4 years regardless of apparent condition

Check that exit sign legends are visible and completely unobstructed

Legal & Compliance Requirement

IS:9583, EN 1838, and NBC 2016 Part 4 require emergency lighting and illuminated exit signage in all commercial, industrial, and public assembly buildings. During fire emergencies, power is frequently cut. Without emergency lighting, occupants in smoke-filled stairwells face severe disorientation. Absence of emergency lighting is one of the most common fire NOC violation findings during inspections.
