Working Principle

How It Works

A fire-rated door is a tested assembly — door leaf, frame, hardware, and seals together — that has passed a furnace test maintaining structural integrity and flame containment for the rated period. When exposed to heat, intumescent strips embedded in door edges and frames expand up to 10 times their size, sealing every gap around the door. Self-closing devices ensure the door is never left propped open, maintaining the building's fire compartmentation barrier at all times.

Keep It Ready

Maintenance & AMC Tips

1

Inspect self-closer quarterly — door must fully close and latch automatically

2

Check intumescent seal condition — replace if cracked or compressed

3

Ensure door is never wedged open — this invalidates the fire compartment

4

Inspect door frame for gaps, cracks, or unauthorised alterations annually

5

Test panic hardware operation and verify certification label is intact

Legal & Compliance Requirement

NBC 2016 and all Indian fire regulations mandate fire-rated doors at every staircase enclosure, lift lobby, service shaft, and compartment boundary wall. Without properly certified and maintained fire doors, smoke and flames spread rapidly between floors — negating every other fire protection system in the building. Fire NOC inspections specifically verify door ratings, self-closing function, and seal integrity.
