Working Principle
How It Works
A hose reel provides a continuous 30-metre supply of water from the building's internal hydrant ring main or direct water supply. The reel unwinds as the operator moves toward the fire — no need to carry heavy coils of hose. Opening the shut-off valve at the nozzle end starts the water flow. The 19mm bore produces a jet sufficient to control small to medium fires from a safe 3–5 metre distance without specialist training.

Maintenance & AMC Tips
Monthly operational test — unwind fully and check water flow
Inspect hose for cracks, blisters, or kinks annually
Lubricate reel spindle and valve gland packing annually
Check wall bracket fixings and cabinet door hinges
Verify connection to ring main or water supply is open and pressurised
Legal & Compliance Requirement
Hose reels are specified in IS:884 and NBC 2016 for all buildings with hydrant systems. They serve as the first line of water-based defence for occupants before fire brigade arrival and can be operated without specialist training. Fire NOC inspections verify hose reel installation at required spacings — typically one per 800 m² of floor area.
