Working Principle

How It Works

A fire hydrant system stores large volumes of water in a dedicated overhead or underground tank. Motor-driven pump sets (electric + diesel backup) maintain constant pressure in a ring main pipework network. Firefighters or trained personnel connect a fire hose to landing valves on each floor and direct a high-volume water jet at the fire. The jockey pump runs continuously to compensate for minor pressure drops, alerting the system if flow demand increases suddenly.

Maintenance & AMC Tips

1

Annual flow test — measure actual flow vs design specification

2

Monthly check of all pump auto-start function and pressure settings

3

Inspect valves, couplings, and landing valve outlets quarterly

4

Drain and flush the system annually to prevent corrosion deposits

5

Verify terrace tank water level is maintained and inlet valve is open

Legal & Compliance Requirement

Fire hydrant systems are mandated by NBC 2016 for industrial buildings above 500 m², high-rise buildings above 15m, hospitals, hotels, and large storage facilities. They are the primary firefighting tool used by fire brigade personnel on arrival and are a non-negotiable requirement for NOC approval for most large commercial and industrial premises in India.
